Early in September I went to a great seminar at the Alexander Center here in NYC. For those who don’t know, the Alexander technique shows you ways to use your body more efficiently, more well, in your everyday life.
Once a month the NYC center opens it’s doors and provides free demonstrations to the public. We were all split into groups and assigned an Alexander Center instructor.
One of the first things we did was find ways to improve the way we walk. It’s something most us do day in and day out, without any real care for how we’re doing it. Then our instructor Anna said something that’s stuck with me and I’ve integrated into my daily life. Walk as if you have a beam of light shining out of your head. It sounds funny, but I instantly started walking taller, and with more purpose.
It’s amazing that by creating that mental picture, that little adjustment in your thinking, you can automatically change the way you carry yourself. And what a great mental construct to take with you out into the world.
